I recently got called out of liking Viserys, by a person who has only just finished the first book, and decided to throw his insults down on me when he was not in any way involved in the conversation. 

First off, that it rude, and Second, I can like whoever the fuck I want.

I tried to explain to him why Viserys acted the way he did, why he treated Dany so poorly. But he wanted to hear none of it and proceeded to call Viserys a narcissist who deserved a more horrible death than the one he got.

So lets start from the beginning here, with the trail of shit Viserys was dragged through as a child.

• His brother is killed thus prompting his pregnant mother and him to have to leave their home and hide out in Dragonstone.
• His mother dies giving birth.
• He and his infant sister are smuggled across the sea to Braavos by Ser Willem.
• Ser Willem dies, leaving them with nowhere to live.
• Viserys and his young sister wander the Free Cities in search of a home and food.
• He is forced to sell his possessions, namely his own mother’s crown.
• He is labeled the Beggar King, for doing what he has to do to save his own life and that of his sisters. 

Now, I am not agreeing with everything that he has done. But Viserys as been through a lot. Not to mention he’s inherited his father’s craziness. So basically from the start he was doomed. But I felt that I was being attacked for liking an unpopular character and that is not okay.

So if you take anything from this, just know that you can have an opinion and you can express it. And no one should tear you down for it.
